Who sits DELE A2
A2 is the level most applicants for Spanish nationality need: people from countries where Spanish is not an official language must hold DELE A2 or higher. The diploma never expires, so one pass is enough for the application. Other candidates sit A2 as proof that they can manage everyday situations in simple Spanish.
How to prepare
Reading. Sixty minutes for 25 questions. Task 2 has eight short texts with one question each, so read the question first and look for that one detail. In task 3, decide which of three texts each statement refers to; underline the words that prove it.
Listening. Task 3 asks whether each statement refers to the man, the woman or neither. “Neither” is a real option: a statement can mention something nobody in the conversation said. Task 4 matches seven messages to ten statements, so three statements are left over.
Writing. Task 1 is a reply of 60 to 70 words to a short message; answer everything it asks. Task 2 is 70 to 80 words, often about past events, so practise the preterite (fui, comí, vivió) against the imperfect (era, tenía) until you choose without thinking.
Speaking. Twelve minutes to prepare, then three tasks: a short presentation on a topic, a photo description and a role play linked to the photo. Learn the language of place (a la derecha, al fondo, delante de) and polite requests (Quería…, ¿Me puede decir…?).
Common mistakes
- Mixing past tenses in writing task 2.
- Copying phrases from the prompt instead of answering in your own words.
- Ignoring the “neither” option in listening task 3.
- Describing the photo in one minute and stopping. Talk about the people, the place and what might happen next.
