What DELE C1 listening task 1 tests

The official guide sets this task on talks, lectures, professional presentations and media pieces such as reports, documentaries, chronicles and commentaries, from public, educational or working life. It tests whether you can understand the main ideas of a monologue and the details that support them. Each recording is played twice, and the guide adds that the listening test includes recordings from three different geographical varieties of Spanish.

The official model exam for this task, with its recording, is listed on the C1 model exams page.

The lesson on listening task 1 gives the full method, a plan for the reading minute and both plays, and a worked extract.

Common traps

  1. A statement can be true in the world and still absent from the talk. Only what the speaker says counts, so a sensible statement on the topic is wrong if the talk never makes it.
  2. Each statement must match the talk in every part. One that joins a figure the speaker gives to a cause the speaker does not give is false, even though half of it is right.
  3. Todo indica que, no hay resultados concluyentes and es probable que leave a point open, so a statement that says está demostrado turns a probability into a certainty.

Worked example

Transcript of the recording

Answer and explanation

Two printers were kept for contracts, so a overstates the change. The overall saving is likely (Todo indica que sí) but not yet calculated, so c turns a probability into a certainty. Al principio hubo resistencia among the longest-serving staff supports b.
