The official guide describes a conversation with the interviewer about the information you gave earlier, in which you also ask the interviewer questions you prepared. It tests whether you can take part in short exchanges with a cooperative partner about that information.

The rater uses a separate scale for this task, and it counts for more than either of the first two. In band 2, you answer the interviewer’s questions with the information asked for, in a way that can be understood, and ask your questions on the topic; in band 1, you answer only some questions, briefly or in part, and cannot ask clear questions.

The lesson on speaking task 3 gives the full method and a worked conversation. The speaking timer runs the time for this task, so you can rehearse the conversation above with a partner. The official model exam for this task is listed on the A1 model exams page.

Trampas habituales

  1. Listen for the question word. ¿Cuántos? asks how many, ¿Cuándo? when and ¿Cuánto tiempo? how long.
  2. The same candidate answers sí and nothing more to ¿Hace muchos deberes en casa?. Band 3 on the rater's scale adds a detail, comment or reason to the information asked for, so say what, when or why.
  3. Your own questions are part of the task. The rater's scale includes asking questions about the topic you chose, so prepare them in the preparation time and ask them before the conversation ends.

Ejemplo resuelto

Respuesta modelo

Entrevistador: ¿A qué hora vuelve a casa?

¿Cuántas horas? gets a number of hours, and the candidate ends by asking two questions on the same topic, as the task requires.
