DELE A1 reading task 1: Personal message

Comprensión de lectura, tarea 1

Read a short email or postcard of 150 to 175 words and answer five questions with three options each.

Part of the 45-minute reading test: 25 questions, 25 points, in group 1 with writing. Every correct answer counts the same, and a wrong answer costs nothing.

Suggested time: 9 min.

Asunto: ¡Tengo trabajo!

Hola, Pablo:

Alba

What DELE A1 reading task 1 tests

The official guide describes a short personal message, such as an email or a postcard, presented the way that kind of text normally looks. The task checks whether you can understand brief and simple messages of this kind, and the options of its final question are pictures.

A blank and a wrong answer both score zero, so pick an option for every question. The lesson on reading task 1 gives the full method, a time plan for the whole reading test and a longer worked message.

Common traps

  1. Por las mañanas and por las tardes often split the writer's day in two. An option can keep the activity and pair it with the other half of the day, so read the time words next to the verb.
  2. Other people appear in the message: mi tía, mis padres, mi amigo Luis. When a question names one of them, find the sentence where that person is the subject before you choose.
  3. Mañana means tomorrow, and por las mañanas means every morning. An option built on a plan for tomorrow does not answer a question about what the writer does each morning.

Worked example

Asunto: Desde Lugo

Hola, Iker:

Greta

Por las mañanas, Greta...

  1. a) va al centro con su tía.
  2. b) va a la piscina.
  3. c) visita la catedral.
Answer and explanation

Answer: b) va a la piscina.

Greta and her aunt go into town por las tardes, so a moves the afternoons to the morning. The cathedral visit is a plan for Mañana, a single day, so c answers a different question.
