What DELE A1 reading task 4 tests

The official guide describes short adverts and notices taken or adapted from information and promotional material, along with posters, signs, labels, packaging and tickets, all from public life. The guide says it measures how well you pull precise facts out of very short informative texts or instructions in common use.

Each question asks for one fact, so read the questions before the text and look for the line that holds the answer. The lesson on reading task 4 gives the full method, with a time plan for the whole reading test and a longer worked text.

Common traps

  1. Prices often come as a list for different people. Before you choose, read the word next to the price: adultos, niños, estudiantes or grupos.
  2. A timetable can change with the season or the day. En verano or los domingos after the usual hours gives an exception, and a question about that time needs it.
  3. Gratis can come with a condition, such as los domingos or para menores de seis años. An option that makes something free for everyone ignores it.

Worked example

Paseo por el casco antiguo

Visita a pie por el centro histórico con un guía. Salidas desde la oficina de turismo, por la mañana y por la tarde, todos los días. Duración: dos horas. Precio: 9 euros. Estudiantes: 6 euros. Niños menores de doce años: gratis. Hay visitas en español, inglés y francés. Los lunes, solo por la mañana.

Los niños de diez años...

  1. a) pagan 6 euros.
  2. b) no pagan.
  3. c) no pueden ir.
Answer and explanation

Answer: b) no pagan.

Niños menores de doce años: gratis, and a ten-year-old is under twelve, so the child pays nothing. Six euros is the student price, so a takes a figure from the line before. Nothing in the text stops children from going, which rules out c.
