Les escribo para darles mi opinión sobre el curso de español que terminé la semana pasada. Estudié en su escuela durante tres meses y la elegí porque estaba cerca de mi trabajo y tenía buenas opiniones en internet.
Lo que más me ha gustado han sido los profesores, que siempre explicaban con paciencia, y las actividades culturales de los viernes. Sin embargo, creo que los grupos eran demasiado grandes: a veces éramos quince alumnos y casi no podíamos hablar. Por eso, les sugiero que hagan grupos más pequeños, de ocho alumnos como máximo.
Aun así, recomendaría su escuela a mis amigos, porque he aprendido mucho y el ambiente es muy agradable.

Me llamo Daniel y yo estoy estudiante en su escuela por dos meses. Yo elegi la escuela porque es cerca de mi casa. El curso es muy bien, me gusta mucho los profesores, son muy simpaticos y la clase es divertido. Tambien me gusta la cafeteria de la escuela, el cafe es bueno y barato. En la clase hay muchos estudiantes de otros paises, de Brasil, de China, de Alemania, nosotros hablamos en ingles en el descanso. Para mejorar, mas actividades, por ejemplo excursiones. Si recomendaria la escuela a mis amigos, es buena escuela. Gracias por todo, hasta luego!

A reply to a formal email from a school needs a formal greeting and close. Hola! and hasta luego! belong to a message between friends, and the email has no formal close such as Atentamente, which matches the band 1 descriptor's hesitant use of greetings and politeness formulas. The points are mentioned without being developed: the reason for choosing the school is distance, the proposal has no reason, and two sentences go on the café and on speaking English in the break, which the school did not ask about.

Lo que más me gustó fue las clases de conversación, porque hablabamos mucho y los profesores corregía nuestros errores. Pero la biblioteca era muy pequeño y no habia libros para mi nivel. Por eso, propongo que compran mas libros de lectura fáciles.
Sí, yo recomendaría su escuela a otras personas, porque los profesores son muy buenos y el ambiente es agradable.

The holistic scale puts this email in band 2, close to the line. Band 2 describes a text that gives the required information in a way the reader understands and gets its messages across in simple, linear sentences, despite errors and repetition. Every question has an answer with a reason, and the proposal, propongo que compran mas libros de lectura fáciles, follows from the complaint about the library. The errors are frequent but never hide the meaning, and nothing the school asked about is left unclear, which keeps the email above band 1.
Banda 2 Adecuación al género discursivo, 15 % de la tarea
The email keeps the basic conventions of a formal reply that band 2 asks for: Estimados señores: with a colon, Les escribo, su escuela and Saludos cordiales to close. It develops nearly all the points clearly: how long, why, what Marco liked, what to improve and whether he would recommend the school. The opening, Les escribo porque quieren saber mi opinion del curso, explains why he writes without naming the email he is answering, and the proposal says nothing about what difference it would make. Band 3 needs every point developed with detail.

Les agradezco la oportunidad de opinar sobre el curso intensivo que acabo de terminar. Asistí a sus clases de febrero a mayo y elegí su escuela porque ofrecía grupos por la tarde, compatibles con mi horario de trabajo, y porque estaba muy bien valorado en varios foros.
Lo que más he apreciado ha sido el método de la profesora Carmen, que nos hacía hablar desde el primer día sin miedo a equivocarnos. Sin embargo, echo de menos más contacto con la cultura local: sería estupendo organizar intercambios con estudiantes españoles una vez por semana.
En cualquier caso, recomendaría su escuela sin dudarlo, sobre todo a quienes trabajan, porque los horarios son muy flexibles.

The relative clause que nos hacía hablar desde el primer día adds information without breaking the sentence.

Grammatical control is good, with the occasional slip band 3 allows. The perfect and the preterite are used correctly side by side (he apreciado, Asistí, elegí), the conditional softens the proposal (sería estupendo) and the recommendation (recomendaría), and the email has no spelling errors. The official guide asks for a letter, or a message for a forum, an email or a blog, written from a short text you have read: a note, an advert, a letter or a post from an email, a forum, a social network, a blog or a magazine. The task tests whether you can produce a simple, cohesive informative text from your reading of a short one.
Each task gets a holistic rating and an analytic one, and the holistic rating counts for less of the final mark than the analytic one. The analytic scale has four categories: fit to the text type (Adecuación al género discursivo), coherence (Coherencia), accuracy (Corrección) and range (Alcance). In band 2 for fit to the text type, a letter keeps the basic conventions of its genre, such as the opening and closing, and develops nearly all the points clearly, though one may be missing or thin.

The reply covers the points in the order given, in short paragraphs, and opens and closes with formulas that suit an old friend. The memory is told in the past with the preterite for events and hasta que to link them, and the offer of help is concrete (les escribo yo, puedo llamar al restaurante), which is the kind of detail the top bands ask for.
